Depending on the amount of debt, especially if it is over $10,000 you may want to look at debt consolidation, or approach the creditor and ask for a debt settlement. If you suggest to them that you may have to consider filing for bankruptcy they may be more willing to come to a settlement. If they are an unsecured creditor and you file for bankruptcy, they run the risk of not getting a penny out of you.
Banks and creditors alike do not want people filing for bankruptcy as this trend only puts the whole economy into more of a downward swing. Bankruptcy filing should only be considered as a final resort and not an easy way out of debt.
By taking a good look at your financial situation you can assess how you came to owe so much to your credit card company. Are you a quick and easy spender? What purchases led to this colossal amount of debt? Be totally honest and open with yourself and take actions to improve your spending habits.
If you are living beyond your means, cut back on all but the essentials. Next time, before you make a large purchase consider this:
Don't pay your bills or rent with your credit card. If you are paying bills with your credit card, then maybe it is time to move to a smaller place. Maybe you need a new or better paying job. Do you really want to be living this type of lifestyle forever, along with all the inevitable stress it will bring?
If you decide to seek financial counselling, check out the institution first to make sure it is reputable. If possible get references from former clients that have used their services. Take positive action and you will succeed in removing debt from your life.
